The controller for the central air conditioning system is in the sitting room, above the main light switch. Press the “RUN/STOP” button to start / stop. The temperature in the sitting room is adjusted using the two “TEMP” buttons on this panel.
Leave the mode on COOL and set the temperature between 19°C and 22°C
PLEASE DO NOT USE THE AIR CONDITIONER TO HEAT THE APARTMENT. SEE HEATING BELOW.
Electricity
If the electricity goes off, check the main trip switch to the right-hand side of the apartment door. If this is in the “on” position, check the individual fuses in the fuse box under the hallway table.
If the electricity goes off in the common parts of the building the main trip switch is to the right of the front door to apartment 1.
In any event please contact Michael.
Hair Dryer
You can find a hair dryer in the drawer in the bathroom.
Heated Towel Rails
The bathroom and the shower room have heated towel rails. These have been fitted because even in the high summer towels remain damp. These are on a timer to come on from 06:00 to 10:00, 13:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 22:00. We suggest that, particularly in the summer, you keep the doors to the bathroom and shower room closed. The radiators can get very hot so please be careful.
Gas
If you smell gas, turn off the main isolating valve which is in the box outside the apartment door, to the right-hand side as you are facing the door. Then call Michael.
Heating
To turn on the central heating (radiators), go to the boiler in the kitchen, which is to the right of the cupboard above the hob. To operate the heating simply press the button with the little radiator symbol below it to turn it on and press again to turn it off. The boiler will immediately fire up. Generally, you will find that 30 to 60 minutes is sufficient to heat the apartment for the evening. Please do not leave the heating on when you leave the apartment or overnight.
Hob
The electric hob is induction and is very straight forward. Touch the on/off button for about a second and then use the + and – buttons for the desired ring to raise or lower the temperature. The full instructions can be found in the manual here. Please use the extractor fan when using the hob. This is activated by pulling the extractor unit towards you.
Dish-Washer
To operate the dishwasher, fill the holder with powder. Press the on switch, press the 45° button, press the START button. Then close the door. The unit is very quiet but a red light shining on the floor indicates that the unit is on. When the red light goes off the dishwasher cycle has finished.
Combination Oven/Microwave-Oven
To operate the oven push the left-hand button and select the desired operation:
- Eclairage – Lighting
- Micro-ondes – Microwave
- Micro-ondes + Chal. tournante – Microwave + Fan Oven
- Micro-ondes + Grill – Microwave + Grill
- Micro-ondes + TurboGril – Microwave + Turbogrill
- Chal. tournante – Fan Oven
- Gril – Grill
We suggest that you use one of three settings; Micro-ondes, Chal tournante or Grill.

Fan - Oven: To use the oven select Chal. tournante, push the right-hand knob, and with the right-hand knob select the desired temperature.

Please remember that if you have any problems with the internet the most likely cause is an external problem with Orange Telecom, the ISP, and are likely to resolve themselves after a short while.
Iron and Ironing Board
The iron can be found in the cupboard under the window in the kitchen. The ironing board is in the right most upright cupboard in the kitchen.

In the kitchen is an Amazon Alexa Echo Dot. He will also respond to various other commands such as:

Roomba
Roomba is a robot hoover/vacuum cleaner.
Please feel free to use Roomba but he does need a bit of care to ensure he does not try to hoover up shoe laces, phone cables etc and his dust container needs emptying after each clean. So if you think it will be too much of a pain just ignore this section!
Roomba is controlled through Alexa. There are two commands:
- Alexa tell Roomba to vacuum.
- Alexa send Roomba home.
We would suggest you set Roomba going when you go out in the morning.
Roomba instructions can be found here

The bin below the iMac is for packaging and glass. The left section is for packaging (paper/tins/plastic) and the right hand section is for glass. There are bags in the cupboard under window. The bin under sink is (obviously) for household rubbish (Ordures menageres).
These can be disposed of in three places:
Square Merimee
Turn right out of the apartment and continue until the pharmacy and opposite are the bins.
Rue des Serbes

Activities
Most people's reason for coming to Cannes is to relax on the beach and soak up the sun and if you are looking for a private beach we highly recommend our favourite Mademoiselle Gray.
However in case your looking for other things to do in and around the area, here are a few suggestions.
Old Town - Le Suquet
The old part of Cannes, is well worth a visit. Parts of Notre Dame d'Esperance church date from the early 16th century. The views are lovely.
There are one or two nice restaurants on the rue Meynardier, I am not very keen on most of the restaurants in this part of the town.
Iles Lerins
The Iles Lerins off the coast of Cannes are delightful to visit and we highly recommend a trip over to them during your stay. There are two main islands the Ile Saint Marguerite and the Ile Saint Honrat.
The ile Saint Honrat is home to Lérins Abbey. To quote the Cannes Tourist Office: "The island was founded by Saint Honorat in the 5th century. It exudes an air of spirituality and boasts vestiges of the past (monastery, fortifications, chapels). The island is owned by a commune of Cistercian monks who grow vines and produce a reputable wine."
Also within the abbey is the La Tonnelle restaurant. A delightful restaurant set on the North side of the island.

The course was reconfigured in 1976 but originally dates from the 1920's. The course is noted for the olive trees and cypresses that adorn the flat terrain and its many water hazards and technical challenges. The Cannes-Mougins Open is on the PGA European Tour. The course is open to anyone with proof of handicap and greens fees are €150 per person. Reservations are recommended.

The second smallest country in the world packs a lot in:
- Musee Oceanographique de Monaco
- The Motor Museum
- The Exotic Gardens
- The Casino Square
- The Palace
- The Japanese Gardens
- The Casino
Villa Ephrussi
The Villa Ephrussi and its gardens is one of the most magnificent villas on the whole of the Cote d'Azur. The Villa Ephrussi was built in the early part of the 20th century with construction commencing in 1905 and Baroness Beatrice Ephrussi (nee de Rothschild) moved in in 1912.
The villa, both exterior and interiors, and the gardens are equisite and are well worth a visit.
The villa is 30 minutes on foot from Beaulieu sur Mer station and there is also parking at the villa
Cannoeing
Canoeing in the Baie de Cannes - what fun. Canoes can be hired at the Palm Beach end of the Croisetter for a very reasonable €35 per day from Kayak iles Lerins.
Running
If you are a runner it does not get much better than running along the Croissette in Cannes. My usual 5 kms route can be found here. For something longer Theoule and back is almost exactly a half marathon!
Restaurants
As well as wonderful places to relax the private beaches are great places to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. We list our two favourites first but to be honest all of the private beaches have upped their game over the past couple of years and we have had good to great experiences at all of the ones we have tried. As opening times vary through the year please check their web site for details of opening times.

It is particularily good for vegetarians and vegans with good plant based choices on the menu. A great wine list with a number of wines by the glass including Whispering Angel sister wine to the amazing (and amazingly priced) Garrus. Highly recommended.

The first private beach as you walk away from the Majestic.
This is a family run beach. Breakfast is lovely (see above). The beach restaurant has been completely refurbished in the winter of 2020. The service is friendly and the food reasonable though not that varied if you are planning on spending every day on the beach here. We feel it has slightly lost its way at the moment and that a revamp of the menu is needed to bring it up to date.
This restaurant is open almost the whole year round.

Changed again but they still don't get it. They have got rid of the dividers on the beach, we had to pay for the beach in advance (in case we ran off without paying I assume) and somehow did not feel welcome. The restaurant now appears to be serving just sushi and puddings, very odd. There are better beaches. Try Plage de Martinez, Miramar Plage or Rado Beach!!

Rosana is only a few hundred meters from the apartment. We finally tried Rosana twice in two days in February 2023 firstly for dinner with friends and then for Saturday brunch en famille. Both occasions the meals were wonderful. We really like this restaurant and being less than 100m from the apartment we can see it becoming a regular.
The lunch and dinner menu offers a very ecletic range of dishes and is very vegetarian and vegan friendly. Brunch is great, offering everything from eggs benedict to fluffy pancakes and delicious juices. Highly recommended.

The only thing that is special about the Voilier is that you are having breakfast on the Croisette and that is fun. But the breakfast is nothing special and we have found the service to be off hand at best. I tried again on the morning of 27th October 2019 and after 15 minutes of being ignored (maybe I am invisible) I got up and walked out. Just don't bother. We have only eaten breakfast here.

A large pizza and pasta restaurant at the beginning of the old town. I think I first ate at this restaurant in 1983 and I have never been disappointed. That said it has changed hands now and was not quite the amazing value that it was. Though you can still get a pizza and a beer for €17. It does exactly what it says on the tin. It is not fine dining and does not have pretensions to be but the food is good and the service is quick and excellent. Great, pasta, pizza and risotto. Of course, there is the Palm d'Or in The Martinez with two Michelin stars. We have not yet eaten there, and I am not sure we will! The menu looks pretentious. To quote the Michelin online guide "In the sumptuous Art Deco setting of the Hotel Martinez, diners look down on La Croisette from a gastronomic peak. The chef creates spectacular cuisine that is sunny and creative, justly deserving of a Palme d'Or!" Need I say more!
The train line along the coast makes almost all the towns of the Côte d'Azur very accessible. This is a bit different and may not be for everybody. But we think it is great fun. It is a table dd'hote restaurant. This, for me, is one of the best restaurants in France and should be visited at least once in life time. Art (and I mean art Picasso, Matisse etc) hangs everywhere, accepted in payment in years gone by for meals taken by the artist at this 100 year old restaurant. It still retains the character and charm of a bygone era. This is evident in the service and the food. Staff are delightful and efficient, the food amazing and the open air terrace is a wonder to dine on. Booking Essential.

This is not an out post of our favourite bar in the world, Harry's Bar Venice (just minutes from our apartment there) but an out post of the Parisian bar of the same name founded in 1911.
This won't be for everyone as it is a 2kms walk from the apartment in the newly refurbished Port Canto area of Cannes but if you fancy a stroll down the Croisette followed by a cocktail or a beer away from the hubbub of central Cannes, then this is worth a visit. Shops
The main shopping in Cannes is on the Croisette and the rue d'Antibes and the streets running between them. Though there are some interesting shops to be found on the streets to the north of the rue d'Antibes. It is bounded on the West by rue du Marechal Joffre and on the East where the rue d'Antibes meets the Boulevard d'Alsace.
Where to start? Cannes has it all. From the most famous names in Haute Couture - you will find Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent, to name a just few, on the Croisette. There are high end jewellers (like Cartier on the Croisette. The famous rue d'Antibes, which is only 50 metres from the apartment is home to countless well know shops and small boutiques alike offering everything from "High Street" fashion (Zara), small specialist shoe shops, of which there are many, to works of art, antiques, home furnishings and beach wear.
Also on the rue d'Antibes you will find FNAC and Darty.
You can find almost everything in Cannes if you search long enough! Just let yourself wander around the streets and you will be amazed at what you can find. Happy shopping!
The first two weeks of July and January are particularly good times for shopping as this is when Cannes holds its annual sales. There are some extraordinary bargains to be had.
Markets
Marché Forville
Absolutely not to be missed is the Forville market (Place du Marché Forville; every morning except Mon). To quote Anthony Peregrine of The Daily Telegraph, "Here is a vast Provençal larder where asceticism comes to die. If you are self-catering or planning a picnic, then this is the spot to head for." There are a myriad of cafes around the market including an outpost of Copenhagan Coffee Lab so why not set off early, take breakfast and spend some time in one of the most splendid markets I have seen in my 40 year of visiting and living in France. This is not just a fruit and vegetable market. There is every food stuff imaginable, fresh pasta, dried spices and herbs, fish (of course), a salt stall, a mushroom seller and fresh flowers. This market has to be seen to be believed.
This is generally considered the best market on the Cote d'Azur. Every day except Monday.
Place Gambetta
On the Place Gambetta, every day except Monday (and as of summer 2018, there are a few fruit and veg stands on a Monday as well) there is wonderful market for fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, fish, dried meats and much more.
